Revision and Editing for Translators
Many practitioners view revision and editing for translators as skills they could develop to extend their professional portfolio; indeed the European Standard for translation service providers requires revision as an integral part of quality control in professional practice. In reality, however, translators are often confused about what exactly is required of them in revision and editing, with common scenarios where agencies and clients request Proof-Reading services when they really want a thorough Stylistic Edit.
Sarah Griffin-Mason will attempt to clarify the issue by providing detailed definitions of a range of services translators can offer alongside Translation, from Comparative Revision to Structural Editing with several points in between.
She will draw on her translation and editing experiences with the InterPress Service and clients such as UNICEF-TACRO, Elsevier-Doyma and the European Training Foundation—each with their particular requirements—to illustrate her points.
Sara Griffin-Mason is a freelance translator, editor and educator with 20 years of experience as a language services provider.
