The Dutch English & English Dutch Legal Translation Course

This is a course aimed at translators working in Dutch English and English Dutch legal translation. It will also be of interest to those intending to enter legal translation in that pair. The course consists of two separate sessions of 90 minutes each; attendees were given the opportunity to prepare the assignments for Session 2  (the files are included for download).

Session 1 includes a discussion of the ‘Survival Kit’ (useful reference works and other sources), general background to the Dutch legal system and legal terminology (based on a question sheet); attention is paid to the differences between the English and the Dutch legal system and the main terminology problems in various branches of law). In the second half of this session we move on to translation theory guidelines (discussion of the general principles underlying the translation of legal terminology).

Session 2  consists of translation exercises (in which the principles discussed during the first session have to be applied) on Dutch English and English Dutch legal translation.

Here is a comment from the satisfaction survey: “That was a really good webinar, so much information to absorb but all very practical and useful. Looking forward to the next one.”

  2. Sian Jones

This was a very useful and informative set of webinars. Chris outlined the differences between the Dutch and English legal systems, pointing out differences between concepts and providing translations for some of the terminology encountered, including false friends. He also suggested some approaches that could be adopted when translating legal terminology, especially where there is no direct equivalent in the target language. All in all an excellent course, delivered by someone with obvious expertise in his subject.

  3. June Derlachter

This course was well-crafted. More than a general introduction to Dutch>English legal translation, Chris’ focus was on the practical issues that I would deal with. Furthermore, his delivery was very good. I really appreciated the tips and resources as well. If a follow-up course was offered, I would certainly attend.
