English Legal System for Legal Interpreters and Translators
This two-part webinar addresses legal interpreters and translators and covers the following subjects: Session 1 – Sources of English Law: legislation, Common Law, Equity, Case Law. The Rule of Law and the Separation of Powers. Appointment of Judges. The structure of the civil and criminal courts, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court (its Divisions and subdivisions), County Courts and Magistrates’ Courts with their respective judges: forms of address and description. Session 2 – Civil and criminal appeals: abolition of the “double jeopardy” rule (the Stephen Lawrence case). Solicitors, barristers and other legal professionals. Issuing civil proceedings and limitation periods: proceedings in court, witnesses and evidence: judgments and orders, hearings and trials: the tribunal system, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, courts martial and coroners’ courts.
