About the Video

Legal terminology: legal immigration

This is a series of 2 videos for both beginning and experienced language professionals who want to learn about or brush up their legal terminology in relation to immigration

Immigration in the whole Europe is at unprecedented levels due to global mass migrations of peoples – and of course Brexit! This is a sub-field of legal terminology most language professionals need to know, and know well, if they are to stay ahead of the curve and perform well in their jobs.

This 2-part series looks at the formal legal terminology involved as well as the jargon used by the main players on both sides of the fence.

Legal immigrants to the UK have successfully navigated official entry requirements and are here by virtue of visas relating to visits, studies, holidays and employment or perhaps due to birth, marriage or the government’s refugee quota obligations and/ or family reunion linked to a successful asylum claim.

Illegal immigrants do not have any permission to be here and may either try to remain in the UK under the radar or to apply for asylum in order to regularise their status.

You can find the first part of the series, Legal terminology: illegal immigration, here.
