Translating for the International Development Sector

International development —translating for government agencies, contractors, NGOs and private foundations that work in developing countries— may be the biggest specialization you’ve never considered pursuing. In this session, we’ll look at a history of development players such as the United Nations and its programs and agencies, USAID and other public development agencies, and private charitable foundations, and the types of translations these entities need. We’ll also talk about some of the key concepts and trends in the international development sector today, and at what languages and specializations are the best fit for translators who want to explore this sector.

This is an overview presentation (mainly for translators who are interested in translating for the international development sector), aimed at translators with at least some translation experience. Newcomers to the profession are also welcome, but should be aware of the above.

By the end of the video, you will:

  • Understand what the international development sector is.
  • Know what types of clients work in that sector.
  • Know what types of documents need to be translated.
  • Understand how to market to International Development  clients and what languages/specializations are most in demand.

Corinne McKay

Corinne is an ATA-certified French to English translator and a current member of the American Translators Association Board of Directors. She translates in the areas of international development, corporate communications and books. Her book How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator, has become a go-to reference for the industry, and her blog Thoughts on Translation is a lively gathering place for freelance translators from around the world. She has been a full-time freelancer since 2002, and has been translating for the international development sector for over 10 years.
