About the Video

Translating Japanese Contracts

Despite recent economic trends in Japan there seems to be a growing demand for legal translation – an area open to translators who are not necessarily lawyers since many Japanese legal documents are drafted by Japanese businessmen who are not lawyers themselves.

The webinar focuses on translating Japanese contracts rather than other legal documents (wills, birth certificates, articles of association, etc.). It points out some of the common features in Japanese legal agreements which may cause difficulty, outline some of the most common types of agreement requiring translation, highlight some of the differences between the British legal system and theirs, and some of the common pitfalls for the legal translator.  It also discusses the use of precedents and other resources and will assist the general Japanese translator in deciding whether legal translation is for them, and provide an overview of the issues to be prepared for, as well as some of the possible solutions.
