International Financial Reporting Standards – an Introduction
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) are now used in well over 130 countries worldwide and have become the de facto global language used by listed companies to communicate financial accounting and reporting information. The London-based International Accounting Standards Board has overseen translations into more than 40 languages, and the core standards are translated from English into 22 EU official languages. Many IFRS financial reports are also translated, which represents a significant translation market.
The expert knowledge embodied by the IFRSs certainly poses a substantial hurdle, but it also represents a significant opportunity for translators and interpreters who are prepared to learn about the relevant terminology and phrasing as well as the structure of the standards and how they are applied in practice.
This language-neutral introduction to IFRSs provides an overview of the standards, the translations and their application, as well as offering guidance on how to research IFRSs and identify relevant resources. It also addresses some underlying financial translation principles and policies that can provide a practical framework for translating IFRS reports, irrespective of the source and target languages.
