Translating for the horticultural industry
This is the second of two related webinars. The second, on agriculture, can be purchased here. Please note that these webinars can be enjoyed separately.
Supplying the world with food and, to a lesser extent, ornamental plants is big business these days. With such a large global export market and so much research being done into making the industries more sustainable and more efficient, there is a demand for translators who know the business.
In this two-part series on translating in the horticultural and agricultural industries we look at a range of key concepts in each sector and some of the terminology the translator needs to be familiar with.
The first video looks at translating in agriculture, with the emphasis on the speaker’s main areas of translation experience: livestock farming and farm automation and equipment.
The second video focuses on horticulture - by which we mean commercial greenhouse horticulture, i.e. the growing of food and ornamental plant crops. We take a look at plant names and how to translate them and we cover the fundamentals of greenhouse food and plant production.
A list of resources and further training/learning is be provided in each video.

Kari has over 25 years’ experience as a freelance and in-house translator working from Dutch, German and Afrikaans to English and is a Fellow of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. A passionate gardener who can’t pass by a garden centre or plant sale without buying something, Kari has developed her love of horticulture, agriculture and nature conservation in general into a specialist field which now accounts for the bulk of her translation work. Kari’s story is a perfect example of how you can develop a specialist field in translation without a formal background in the industry.
